Before a single drop of paint goes on, the prep work has to be right. That means caulking every seam, gap, and joint on the exterior. It sounds simple, but it's one of the most skipped steps in the industry - and skipping it is exactly why so many paint jobs start peeling and cracking within a few years.

Here's the thing about fresh caulk - it does two jobs at once. It seals out moisture before it gets a chance to work its way behind the siding, and it creates a smooth, tight surface that paint can actually bond to. On board-and-batten siding like this, those vertical seams run the full height of the wall. Every one of them needs to be sealed properly. We go through and hit them all before we ever load a brush or roller.

We know it's not the flashiest part of the job. You won't find a lot of contractors posting about caulk lines. But this is exactly the kind of detail that separates a paint job that lasts a few years from one that holds up for a decade or more. Moisture is the enemy of any exterior finish, and caulk is one of the first lines of defense against it.

The paint reveal is coming. But we wanted to share this step first because it's a big part of why the finished product looks - and performs - the way it does. The surface prep is already done right. Now it just needs color.
